Visual Art & Art History

Our graduates are playing an important role in the emergence of Toronto as one of the world's leading cultural centres. Many alumni have established careers at home and abroad as practising professionals, in solo careers and as members of collectives they have founded to exhibit their work. Others hold key executive, curatorial, editorial and administrative positions in public and private galleries, contemporary art media, arts publications, video and photographic cooperatives, and other artist-run spaces. Some are sharing their passion and accomplishments as educators at the secondary and post-secondary level. They inspire and challenge us all with their ongoing work and their direct contact with our current undergraduates as mentors and instructors.

In this video, York MA art history graduates and curators Melissa Bennett and Michelle Jacques discuss how to organize exhibitions, work with artists and shape institutional collections. The video also features the African-themed artwork of Brendan Fernandes (BFA 2002), a two-time Sobey Art Award nominee (2010, 2013) who divides his practice between Toronto and New York City.
