Visual Art & Art History

How to Apply (BFA)

Honours BFA in Visual Arts

Admission to the Visual Arts Studio (BFA) program in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design at York University is based on both academic and artistic criteria. The University reviews your academic history, while artistic admissibility is assessed locally in the each department. The application process for Visual Arts (Studio Art) (BFA) is a two-step process:

1. Apply to York University

Submit your application to the York University: The School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design - Visual Art - Studio Art (BFA) program on the Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) websiteIf you are not a current high school student, you may also be eligible to apply directly through the York University Office of Admissions.

2. Complete your Supplementary Evaluation

The supplementary evaluation for our Visual Art (Studio) program includes an online component and an on-campus in-person evaluation.

We strongly encourage all our applicants to attend an in-person evaluation on campus as it offers you the most extensive and engaged experience.  However if you live more than 400km away from York University, or have other extenuating circumstances that preclude you from coming to campus, you may arrange a distance evaluation.

Once you have completed Step 1 (above) and received your York Reference Number from the Office of Admissions, you may proceed to the Supplementary Evaluation website.

i) Online Component

The online component consists of a questionnaire that helps us learn about your academic and artistic background as well as your specific interests and goals as they relate to Visual Art (Studio Art).

At the end end of the questionnaire, you will be asked to pay a $60 CDN evaluation fee, and book an appointment for your portfolio evaluation.

ii) In-person Portfolio Evaluation

Your in-person on-campus evaluation will consist of a brief portfolio review with one of our faculty members. You will also have an opportunity to attend an information session about the program, chat with current students and take a tour of our Visual Art facilities.

Portfolio Requirements:

Your portfolio should consist of 8 art works that illustrate your current technical and creative abilities. Slides or photographs are acceptable for large or awkward pieces but original, unmounted artwork is preferred. At least two different media should be represented from the following:

  • drawing
  • photography
  • sculpture
  • digital art
  • print media
  • computer-generated imagery
  • painting
  • audio-video
  • experimental work

A current sketchbook, idea book or journal is required and will count as one of the 8 pieces.

Applicants will have an informal interview with a Visual Arts faculty member to discuss their portfolio and their goals.
